Oxford & District Indoor Bowls Club

Club History

At the end of the 1960s members of the Oxfordshire Bowling Association discussed the prospects of an Indoor Bowling Club in Oxford. Following the success of two indoor fixtures, played against Southampton and Portsmouth, a Steering Committee was set up to initiate the funding and building of an indoor bowling facility. The outcome was that the present day site at Sandy Lane West, Littlemore, Oxford was identified and the building work was completed in 1972, with the club opening for bowling on 7th October that year.

Since that time the club has gone from strength to strength, with both the playing surface and club amenities being upgraded over subsequent years.

From the beginning the Association has enjoyed both a mens section and a ladies section. The former has been known as the Isis Indoor Bowls Club and the latter the Cherwell Indoors Bowls Club. In keeping with present day thinking, these two sections were amalgamated in the summer of 2000 to form a joint club known as The Oxford and District Indoor Bowls Club.
